The risk of data breaches is getting worse according to a study by Digital Shadows.

Organisations worldwide are inadvertently exposing 2.3 billion data files due to mis-configured systems, cloud storage services, and a reliance on legacy technologies. This is an increase of 50 per cent over the last 12 months. Around one billion of the incidences were from the EU countries, 262 million more than last year. It is thought that this could be an indicator that the tougher data protection regulations introduced through GDPR have failed to improve some aspects of poor practices.

The exposed files included credit card data, passwords, address data, passport data, bank records, and medical information, the exposure of which increases the risk of identity theft and ransomware attacks. The study found that more than 17 million files have been encrypted by malware since April 2018. This gives potential criminals everything they need to carry out large scale identify fraud.
